The National Working Conference From policy to practice: developing sustainable water and health projects for Moldova, organized by Women for Water Partnership (WfWP) and hosted by its members BPW-Moldova and WiSDOM, took part from May 18 to May 20, 2009. The partners of this process were the NGOs Soroptimists Chisinau, Ecotox, BSWC, Eco-TIRAS and European Solidarity for Water in Moldova.
The conference and its preparatory meetings were primarily financed by the Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and Environment in the Netherlands.
The goal of the working conference was to develop concrete initiatives in the area of water and health.
At the conference were present 70 representatives of grassroots organizations, government departments, local authorities, research institutions, civil society organisations, NGOs, CBOs, Regional and International institutions, UNECE, WHO, development partners, private sector and other stakeholders.
The main theme is sustainability of grassroots water and health initiatives. Within this theme important questions like the situation of drinking water & sanitation in relation to health in Moldova, women, health and water (including system of surveillance and early warning systems WRD) and the protection of water resources, including Transboundary Rivers and lakes, were addressed.
This conference was based on case studies from Moldova that provided an in-depth analysis of the problems experienced by grassroots/communities especially women and girls in addressing issues on access to safe and healthy water as well as adequate sanitation.
